Mobilidade urbana: cenários de mitigação de GEE através de intervenções nos sistemas de transporte – o caso da Grande Natal.

Concluído

The city of Natal, with 885,180 inhabitants and located in the Northeast of Brazil, is a representative middle city of Brazilian and Latin America: experienced strong economic growth, especially in the last decades of the 20th century. In the transport sector, this economic growth was reflected in an increase in the rate of motorization, especially of the private vehicle fleet, causing traffic jam, pollution and traffic-accidents. This rate of motorization was further boosted by the poor quality of public transport and the pattern of spreading to suburban areas. However, even with this accelerated growth, medium-sized cities such as Natal offer a unique opportunity for Sustainable Development: as a result of their urban scale, allow effective and shorter-term actions, improving the sustainability and life quality of their inhabitants and reducing the pressure on large metropolises. In order to take the first step in a Sustainable Planning, the GHG inventory, which reveals the current state of emission levels and their sources, can be applied. With a systematic analysis of emissions from the activities of the Municipality, a GHG inventory allows the risk management of emissions and identification of reduction opportunities. In this research, the emissions of the urban transport sector of the city of Natal are quantified and analyzed. After the collection of public data available and requested, the GPC methodology will be adopted for the calculation of the inventory, compatible with the quantification methodologies of the IPCC. After quantification of this inventory will be made the analysis of the role of each sub-sector of existing urban transport: individual motorized transportation, public urban and interurban road transport, rail transport and cargo transportation. This identification will allow future actions of Sustainable Planning in the municipality, directing effort for the sectors of greater impact.
