A Policy-based Adaptive Multimedia and Dynamic Resource Allocation System for SDMN-based Infrastructures

Concluído

The popularization of mobile network communication systems and the growth of customers Quality of Experience (QoE) requirements regarding a wide variety of applications leads to a scenario wherein Internet Service Providers (ISPs) must deploy innovative and sophisticated Quality of Service (QoS) strategies based on the Policy-based Network Management (PBNM) concept to efficiently manage network resources in order to improve mobile users perceived QoE. To address this issue, the Software-Defined Mobile Networking (SDMN) paradigm allows a framework for deploying new resource management strategies such as class-based over-provisioning model, which shows itself as the one most effective strategies in meeting applications QoS requirements through admission control procedures. However, especially in the mobile multimedia application scenario, the admission control operation may become ineffective when dealing with congestion situations since current streaming services do not provide an efficient way to control its transmission rate. This limitation is mainly caused by the rate adaptation engine which depends on user-side implementations, leading to unfair resource sharing. Furthermore, traditional rate adjustment mechanisms also may impact on less capable mobile devices due to processing overheads, such as smartphones and IoT-enabled (Internet of Things) devices. In this scope, this project aims to investigate how traditional rate adaptation techniques could negatively impact multimedia QoE and how it may affect the performance of mobile devices. Thus, it will also examine how SDMN and PBMN-based network management is capable of overcoming these issues, and then propose an innovative lightweight multimedia rate adaptation system to significantly improve users QoE and mobile device performance over traditional multimedia services.
